| Cyprus |
The island of Cyprus is situated in the eastern Mediterranean Sea south of Turkey. Since 1974 the island has been divided into 2 parts. The southern part is populated by the Greek Cypriots (80%) while the northern part mainly consists of Turkish Cypriots. The terrain of the island is mainly lowland in the center where the lowland of Messoria can be found. Two mountain chains can be found on the island, Kyrenia mountains in the north and Trodos mountains in the south where the highest peak reaches 1952m above the sea. The mountain flora consists of macchia (a bushy type of plant) and pinjies. The mighty oak forests were devastated centuries ago. The climate of Cyprus is of typical Mediterranean nature, which means hot dry summers, and mild, damp winters. Grain, potatoes, olives, cotton, fruits and wine are grown and produced in Cyprus.
As a result of the 1974 island split, the wealthiest agricultural areas came under Turkish Cypriot control. The industry and tourism, which had been experiencing a negative period, recovered more quickly in the Greek Cypriot area. |
